CHICO HIGH TINY HOME PROJECT

Valley Contractors Exchange is excited to lead a group of Chico High students in a Design Build Competition in Sacramento hosted by the Construction Industry Education Foundation (CIEF), where they will be building a Tiny Home for a survivor of the 2020 Bear Fire.

The Design Build competition, which takes place in May, is led by students and guided by mentors from schools across California. While most teams build sheds, the Chico High team has committed to the ambitious goal of building a tiny home, permitted through the county, for one of the many survivors who have struggled to rebuild after the Bear Fire.

The Team needs your help. The project goals include taking 15 students and mentors to the competition in Sacramento and then continuing the tiny home build at Chico High, including 30+ students in the total process.

The estimated fundraising need for the tiny home is $35,000 for materials, which must be Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) compliant, as the home will be located in a high fire hazard zone.

Students have already started the design process, with the generous support of NorthStar Engineering and NorCal Building Consulting, and are working through the permitting process with our local industry mentors.

Students will travel to Cosumnes River College in Sacramento on May 4th and 5th, where they will frame, and dry-in the tiny home. The home will then be transported back to Chico High, where the students, along with industry professionals, will run the electrical, plumbing, heating and cooling, drywall, cabinetry, and finish work. Upon completion, the home will be delivered to the home site in Forbestown, where it will be placed and secured to a permanent foundation in early June.

VCE and the Chico High Team are hoping to recruit construction industry professionals to guide them through the trades as they build the home and are also looking to reach the fundraising goal of $35,000.

All donations can be received through the Valley Contractors Exchanges Pass-Through Fund and anyone in the construction industry looking to assist students with the build can sign up here.
